Nearly six years ago, Elitza Barzakova joined the USAID Trade Hub as its Home Décor & Fashion Accessories Advisor. In 2009, she became Market Linkages Manager, based in New York City. Now, she’s taking her wealth of experience and insight to the Master’s of Business Administration program at the University of Michigan. Unfortunately, this means she is leaving the Trade Hub. Elitza’s West Africa experience began in 2003 – as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Segou, Mali.

Leading fashion designers will exhibit their latest styles at Africa Fashion Week New York July 11-14 in New York City. More than 20 leading designers are participating under the theme, "Where Fashion Began." AFWNY is produced by Adirée and includes runway shows hosting 21+ designers from various countries in Africa and those of the African Diaspora, exhibitions, and industry networking events.

Investment across West Africa would increase sharply, creating thousands of jobs, if regional barriers to trade were eliminated, companies from Ghana, Nigeria and Togo told the USAID Trade Hub Business Environment Team in recent interviews. Companies in Togo said they had reduced sales to the region because of the high costs of moving goods.

May 4th Highlights

Importers expressed readiness to buy more African shelled cashews and confirmed that certifying nuts that are ready to roast will meet their needs. Their comments came during the Association of Food Industries Conference in Florida, U.S.A. Jim Giles, a food safety and quality consultant for the African Cashew Alliance, and Elitza Barzakova, the Trade Hub Market Linkages Manager, presented the new strategy rolling out the new food safety and quality seal at the trade association meeting, with leading U.S. food importers.

In January, Gora Athj, the CEO of EGA Confection, gave a tour of his apparel factory in Dakar to an international buyer. Over four days of meetings facilitated by the USAID Trade Hub, the buyer looked at all aspects of producing apparel in Senegal, including visits to government offices and a major shipping company.
